How do I find out if an event has been cancelled?
There are several ways that the museum provides notification of a cancellation. The public can check the museum website main page at the top of which will be an alert bar notification regarding cancellation up to the day of the event. The cancellation will also be listed next to the event description in the event portal up to the day of the event. You can also call during weekday business hours from 9 to 5 for an updated status. Subscribers to the museum's free e-communications and followers of the museum's social media sites receive updates regarding museum public programming status. We recommend that you sign up to receive our free e-communications to keep abreast of our changing exhibitions and various public programs.

When the museum is closed, a situation which is reported by local media, onsite public programming is automatically cancelled.

Can I use an image from your website for a school project or other personal use?
Generally, permission is not required for personal, non-commercial use such as for a personal website or school project. However, an image should appear with credit to Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum. If images appearing on our site are credited to another person or organization, they may not be used without that party's permission. When in doubt, please call the museum to check. How may I obtain rights to use a Smithsonian image for a book or for other commercial purposes?

What opportunities does the museum offer for research?

  • Library: Research may be done in the Anacostia Community Museum Library which is open to the public by appointment only.
  • Object Collections: Access to collection materials requires making a research appointment with the appropriate staff.
  • Archives: Access to collection materials requires making a research appointment with the appropriate staff.
  • Fellowships: Fellowships at the Smithsonian Institution provide students, professionals, and scholars with opportunities to pursue independent research projects in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff.

Can I buy museum merchandise?
The museum does not currently have a museum gift shop.

What is the cost of museum admission?
Admission is always free.

There is limited free parking on site. Street parking is also available.

How do I get to the museum?
Follow this link to determine the best way to access the museum by automobile or Metro. The museum also offers SHUTTLE Anacostia, free seasonal roundtrip transportation to and from the National Mall which runs weekends (Saturdays, Sundays and holiday Mondays) from Memorial Day weekend though Labor Day weekend.

Does the museum offer free WiFi?
Free WiFi access is available in the galleries and the Program Room (first floor) and in the Library and the Archives (upper levels, available by appointment only). You may obtain the access code at the museum lobby desk.

Am I allowed to take pictures in the museum?
Unless otherwise clearly posted, video cameras and flash photography are permitted in the museum. You are invited to share photos as well as memories and impressions of your museum visit with us and other fans by following us on Twitter or friending us on Facebook.

Commercial photography is not allowed for purposes other than those approved by the museum. Non-news filming permission requires an application submission. For more information, contact the Public Affairs Office.

Public use of a tripod is not permitted. News photographers and videographers need to make arrangements with the Public Affairs Office by calling 202-633-4876.

Are backpacks, water bottles, and food allowed in the museum?
We do allow backpacks in our museum. Food and beverages may not be consumed anywhere in the museum. Do consult our Visiting Tips.

Do you provide wheelchairs for visitors?
We have a limited number of wheelchairs available. Please read our recommendations for Visitors with Disabilities.

How do I volunteer?
