Before Freedom Came: African American Life in the Antebellum South

The exhibit examines the lives of African Americans, free and enslaved, during the Antebellum South. The exhibition focuses on remembrances of slavery, told through personal testimonies, traditional stories and songs, and objects. Antebellum race relations and African Americans' roles as agricultural and industrial workers, merchants and artisans are also examined in several areas of the exhibition.
