On Their Own: Selected Works by Self-Taught African American Artists

January 31, 2005 – June 12, 2005

Location: Main Gallery

The wit and the daring of 6 self-taught artists take center stage in an exhibition showcasing the works of Chris Clark, Simon Jackson, Mary Proctor, Sam "The Dot Man" McMillan, Gregory "Mr. Imagination" Warmack, and Ruby Williams. Using paintings, sculptures, drawings, and collages of "found objects," the show explores the impact of these artists who bring bold notions and new ideas to the African American aesthetic. The subject matter ranges from visions and historical events to people and objects pulled from their immediate surroundings.
