Scope and Contents
This series contains images of convenience stores, restaurants and urban carry-outs in Washington, DC's Wards 7 and 8. There are also photographs of Barry Farm Public Housing demolition and specific homes at the Barry Farm Dwellings before destruction. In addition, the annual Martin Luther King, Jr., parade is documented beginning with a Peace Walk from Anacostia Metro Station on Martin Luther King, Jr., Ave SE and finishing at Good Hope Road, SE. The Anacostia Community Museum and many social and service organizations participated in the parade. Additionally, the Funk parade is included in this series. The parade started at the historic Howard Theater and continued through the U Street Corridor to the Lincoln Theater. The event honors Washington, DC funk music, and includes images of DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Batala drummers, the Phelps Ace Academy Marching Band, Lion Dancers and Carnival dancers. Another parade documented in this group is the Capitals National Parade, held after the Washington Capitals Hockey Team won the Stanley Cup.
