Object Details

Scope and Contents
The Weekly News collection spans from August 7, 1909 to December 11, 1909, and measures 1.6 linear feet. The Washington, DC-based paper was "Devoted to the East Section of the Anacostia River," with the stated motto of "A Paper in Every Home." The Weekly reported on church news and society events, contained advertisements for neighborhood businesses, and listed places of interest in the area, such as the Frederick Douglass Home and the Fort Stanton Civil War Fort. The paper's early editions were four pages long, each comprised of three-columns of community news and a host of advertisements for local businesses. The later issues expanded in size and content, covering more Washington, DC neighborhoods, as well as national and international news.
Biographical / Historical
The later issues of the paper list Elias Auger as proprietor and manager, but it is not known who was the founder. The newspaper's offices were located in the Randle Highlands neighborhood of Southeast, Washington, DC. According to the Library of Congress, The Weekly News ceased operations in approximately December 1909.
