Southwest DC - “A Right to the City” Exhibition
    Description
xcerpts from oral history interviews about the Southwest neighborhood of Washington, DC that appear in the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum’s exhibition, “A Right to the City” (2018- 2020). In a moment of rapid population growth and mounting tensions over development, “A Right to the City” explores the history of neighborhood change and civic engagement in the nation’s capital by looking at the dynamic histories of six Washington, D.C., neighborhoods: Adams Morgan, Anacostia, Brookland, Chinatown, Shaw and Southwest. The exhibition tells the story of these communities through the eyes of the Washingtonians who have helped shape these neighborhoods in extraordinary ways. They have used their collective community power to fight for quality public education, healthy and green urban spaces, equitable development and transportation, and a truly democratic approach to city planning. MORE INFORMATION: http://www.anacostia.si.edu/Exhibitions/Details/A-Right-to-the-City-6222 Interviewees include: - Roberta Patrick, native Southwester and longtime staff member of the Southwest Community House - Neal Peirce, longtime Southwest resident and co-founder of the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly (SWNA)

    Description
Saturday, June 19 | 10:30am – 12pm In the spirit of Juneteenth, we are celebrating emancipation in this workshop, which explores the roots of community freedom and security through expertise in and stewardships of the land. Tracing the legacies of such individuals as Alethia Tanner and founders of Barry Farm/Hillsdale, the workshop will look at how "freedom" can be found in the green spaces of our communities. Garden facilitator, Derek Thomas, will harvest and compost the spring vegetables and explore the role of pollinator plants in the garden.

The Future is Here: Women's Environmental Leadership Series (WEL)
    Description
Known for their forward-thinking ideas, these female panelists gave us a glimpse into the future of environmental justice. Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum started women’s history month with an exploration of women’s leadership roles in the seminal First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit held thirty years ago in Washington, DC and the impacts of such participation on subsequent justice efforts. We end our celebration of a month of women’s environmental leadership with an exploration of the future, the women who are shaping and will continue to shape and lead environmental spaces at local, national, and international levels. The panel explores the perspectives they bring into these multiple spaces, the definitions they will challenge and expand, and the shape of the communities they will help to build. In celebration of Women’s History Month, ACM’s Urban Waterways project hosted four virtual community forums as part of its Women’s Environmental Leadership (WEL) initiative. Moderator: Tamara Toles O’Laughlin, International Environmental Advocate & Strategist Panelists: Erika Dickerson-Despenza, Playwright Cultural Worker, Tow Playwright-in-Residence, The Public Theater Sekita Grant, Vice President, Programs, The Solutions Project Corina Newsome, Community Engagement Manager, Georgia Audubon

    CHUCK BROWN Tribute Final
    Description
In the wake of the sudden loss of Chuck Brown, a touching day of tribute was held celebrating his life and music during "Citified: Arts and Creativity East of the Anacostia River," the Anacostia Community Museum program featured at the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The final segment of a three- part museum project examining community and creativity, "Citified" showcased the various forms of artistic expression shown in the community including traditional and non-traditional art forms such as tattoo art, hand dancing, mural painting, found object sculpture and, of course, Go-Go music. This video documents the event paying homage to the "Godfather of Go-Go" with interviews of key artist protégés and promoters of the distinctly southeast DC music form.
