Caption
Each of the six squares in this block quilt—arranged in two columns and three rows—contains an appliqued flower resembling a daisy with eight colorful patterned fabric petals set on a beige background. The addition of batting behind the center of each flower adds dimension, while hand-quilted butterflies and fans contribute texture and complement the garden motif. Black fabric outlining the daisies match the black sashing around each block.
The creator of the quilt, Viola Canady, used quilting to build community. She founded the Washington, DC quilting guild, the Daughters of Dorcas and Sons, which continues to teach and share a love of quilting in local schools, hospitals, and community centers.
