- This pinback button depicts an African American man surveying a crowd with the Reflecting Pool and United States Capitol in the background. In a combination of red and white lettering, the round button reads, “National African American Leadership Summit Salutes the Million Man March / October 16th, 1995 / Washington, DC.” Controversial due to its co-organizer, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the Million Man March promoted African American unity, especially among African American men, and approached the number in its name, becoming one of the largest gatherings in American history at the time. The button’s image closely resembles, but departs from, the logo for the Million Man March, which features Farrakhan. The March’s co-organizer, Rev. Dr. Benjamin Chavis, founded the National African American Leadership Summit in June 1995.
