- Caption
- Torn pieces of paper in hues of brown, grey, and black coalesce into this collage by Alvin C. Hollingsworth (1928-2000). Faces and partial figures drawn in thin black lines recall the artist’s beginnings as a comic book illustrator. Hollingsworth might have created the artwork while belonging to Spiral, a group of African American artists, diverse in artistic approach, who met weekly from 1963 to 1965 to discuss the role of artists in the Civil Rights Movement and the relationship of aesthetics and political expression. A lifelong New Yorker, Hollingsworth studied at the Art Students League, City College of New York, and New York University. He taught community college and hosted a television show about art.
