- Caption
- This lifelike charcoal portrait depicts an elderly woman wearing a headscarf, illuminated from behind with a soft, ethereal light. She looks away from the viewer, her expression resolute. The portrait was included in the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum’s groundbreaking 1970 exhibition “Lorton Reformatory: Beyond Time” where incarcerated individuals at the nearby Lorton Correctional Complex collaborated with the museum. Works of art, like this portrait, encouraged viewers to consider the residents’ creative spirit and develop a more nuanced understanding of their lives.
