- Caption
- A statement from the artist: "Africans extracted from the continent of Africa were relegated to two realities of American society: house slave and field slave. The house slave took care of the interior of the home by cooking, serving, cleaning and caring for the children and slave master. The hotplate kept the food warm and also served as a small utility table for the master's use."
