Caption
Clear skies and a green sea form the background for this painted relief carving of a square-rigged ship with large white sails keeling to the left. Artist Ira Blount demonstrates his woodcarving and painting skills in this piece, utilizing the natural texture of the wood to mimic the ship’s hull, while vibrant colors are used to represent the quality of the undulating waves.
After moving to Washington, DC following World War II, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
