- Caption
- This stained wood cross is set against as smaller cross to create a contrasting effect. The simply rendered symbol is mounted on a rectangular wood backing with alternating wood grain patterns. The object, possibly intended to be a liturgical decoration, evokes the form of a Bible. Local artist Ira Blount (1918-2020) was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church congregation in Northwest D.C. Here, he combines his artistic proclivities and Christian faith.
- After moving to Washington, DC following World War II, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
