- Constructed in the shape of a butterfly, this basket includes double plied twisted seagrass cord, wood splints, and round reeds woven in a plain weave. This variety of materials gives the piece texture and provides a slight variation in color, as the seagrass cord is darker than the splints and round reeds. The handle is covered with a plain weave and reed weft.
- The basket has won numerous awards in local county fairs, including the Calvert County Fair (Champion), Prince George’s County Fair (First Place, Open Class), St. Mary’s County Fair (Second Place), Anne Arundel County Fair (First Premium), and Calvert County Fair (First Premium). In addition to basketry, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
