- Caption
- The letter “A” fashioned out of rusted metal beams rests on a pedestal in this painting. A brilliant purple bunch of lilacs is placed in the center of the letter. The fragrant flower was a common subject of the artist and longtime Anacostian, John Robinson. The background of the work includes passages from his neighborhood. Colorful row houses line the block, and the hills of Anacostia are visible in the distance. The text reminds viewers both of his community’s merits—its beauty and strength—while noting its fragility.
