Caption
In this woodblock print of the biblical character, Mary Magdalene, a woman crosses her arms and rests her head on her shoulder. Her downturned eyes and frown suggest melancholic contemplation. Her face, arms, and waist are black, while the background, chest, breasts, and hair are carved away, creating a textured white space. The demarcation between the figure and her environment are blended together, heightening the sense of moodiness in the image.
