- Caption
- A Black woman looks to the left in this portrait painted in sepia-toned watercolor. She is depicted nude from the shoulders up wearing a closely cropped hairstyle and gazing steadily away from the viewer. The portrait, likely observed from life, was first sketched in graphite, and then built-up with wet-into-wet washes of brown ink or watercolor. Just as the woman is depicted without clothing, the image is stripped of detail—save for a single hoop earring—providing limited information about who the sitter was. The artist, Sylvia Jackson, entered this portrait for inclusion in the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum’s 1974 exhibition dedicated to the DC Art Association, an organization originally founded by public school teachers that aimed to enrich communities through art.
