- George Washington Mason founded Mason’s Funeral Home in the 1890s. His business started small—his first location was in a private home—but during the Spanish-American War, a government contract for caskets helped the business grow. In the early 1900s, Mason moved his business to Butler Hall. Mason’s Funeral Parlor remained in business through the 1970s and was remembered as a “landmark” in the community.
- In 1977, the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum’s Board of Directors voted to include Mason’s portrait in “Phil Ratner’s Washington,” an exhibition honoring current and former Anacostia residents who contributed to the civic life of the community.
