Caption
Nicholas F. Shi (1958-) carefully crafts a self-portrait in “El Otro Rostro del Inmigrante,” or “The Other Face of the Immigrant.” In this digital print on canvas, the Washington, DC artist superimposes a grayscale outline of his face over a collage of newspaper clippings that celebrate his achievements. In his words, “it presents a positive face of immigration in contrast to pervasive negative immigrant stereotypes.” Most of the articles are written in Spanish, however, Shi’s artwork often meditates on the intersection of his Salvadoran and Chinese heritage. In addition to challenging xenophobia, the neo-pop impressionist work also explores the media’s role in shaping assumptions about immigrants. [The artwork was on display at the Anacostia Community Museum’s exhibition, Gateways/Portales, from December 2016 to January 2018.]
