This round pinback button urges Washington, DC residents to reelect Marion Barry, Jr. (1936-2014) as the City Council’s At-Large Member in 1976. In red capital letters, Barry’s name is centered horizontally on the light yellow button. Smaller text curves around the top and bottom of the button with the instruction, “Re-elect,” and the campaign described in brief, “City Council ‘76.” Barry won the At-Large seat in the first Council seated under Home Rule in 1974 and was reelected in 1976. He began earning his “Mayor for Life” moniker two years later when elected to the office that he held for three consecutive terms (1978, 1982, 1986) followed by a fourth term beginning in 1994. He also served as School Board Chair in the early 1970s and became City Council Member for Ward 8 in 2004, a role that he retained until his death in 2014.
