- This round pinback button urges reelection of Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy (1933-) as Washington, DC’s delegate to the United States House of Representatives in 1976. The incumbent’s last name appears in white letters on the blue, metal button along with the year, abbreviated in smaller print below. Fauntroy served in the District’s Congressional delegation from 1972 to 1992. The lifelong Washingtonian and Dunbar High School graduate played a major role in the Civil Rights Movement. As Delegate, he advocated for home rule as well as statehood for residents of the nation’s capital. The District gained representation in both branches of Congress through a constitutional amendment that he shepherded through the legislative process in 1978.
