Caption
The civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome” inscribed across this print commemorates the famous 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In the print, the crowd is represented by over one hundred semi-circles in eight rows. These anonymous “heads” recede as they near the Lincoln Monument centered in the background. The perspective situates the viewer as if she were a member of the faceless crowd, inviting her to consider her role in the ongoing struggle for civil rights.
