Caption
The delicate and striking figures at the center of this poster advertise a Jazz Workshop led by African Heritage Drummers and Dancers. The poster was designed by Eric Marlow, a high school student at the time who would go on to illustrate the story of Rosa Parks. Marlow’s artistic formation and the development of the New Thing Art & Architecture Center came at a turning point in Civil Rights activism, when efforts turned from promoting big ideas to developing concrete programs and local projects. The poster is in many ways at the crossroads of tradition and innovation: the women in their robes recall traditional African dress and yet their arms, outstretched to the left, might point to the future of the cultural landscape.
