- Caption
- A Black woman with closed eyes wears a black dress and a decorative wreath in this portrait. The solidity of her figure contrasts with the amorphous, iridescent pink and green form floating behind her head. High school student Eric Marlow painted this image during his time with the New Thing Art & Architecture Center. The community arts space in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC provided opportunities to engage with professional artists locally and internationally, inspiring youths like Marlow to cultivate their talent. Marlow’s later work featuring supernatural and mythological creatures is prefigured here in the mystical quality of the painting.
