- Caption
- Plaques like this one were placed on buildings successfully purchased by their tenants, with help from the Tenant Purchase Program implemented by Washington, D.C. Mayor Marion Barry. The Program gave tenants the first right to purchase the building if the landlord decided to sell, providing a crucial barrier to mass displacement in lower-income communities affected by gentrification. This plaque was donated to the museum by Marie S. Nahikian in the name of the District of Columbia residents who made a difference. Nahikian initially developed a tenant ownership program in Adams Morgan to combat mass evictions in her neighborhood. While working at the D.C. Department of Housing,Marie Nahikian became instrumental to the incorporation of local, grassroots organizing into citywide policies. The Tenant Purchase Program recognized in this plaque is to this day one of the most progressive housing initiatives in the nation.
