- This vest is a standard-issue staff uniform issued to employees of Lotte Plaza Market, a popular Korean supermarket chain based in the Washington, DC area. The form, design and bright color help staff to stand out, and are common in Korean supermarkets in both the United States and South Korea. Lotte Plaza is the largest of the locally-based Asian supermarket chains. The first store opened in Rockville, MD, in 1989, replacing a former Safeway supermarket, and the chain later expanded to locations in Virginia, Maryland, Florida and New Jersey. While it initially catered mostly to Japanese and Korean clienteles, the store began to stock goods used in other South Asian and Latinx cuisines as the neighborhood grew and diversified.
