Caption
This round pinback button commemorates the International Women's Day March that took place in Lexington, KY, in 1987. The pin features a drawing of a prison cell window resembling the American flag, from where a hand sticks out waving a flag of Puerto Rico. The drawing is inscribed inside a female gender symbol. Red lettering reads "Shut Down Control Units!". At the time of the march, Puerto Rican political activist Alejandrina Torres was incarcerated in the Lexington High Security Unit.
The button is among more than 200 collected by Washington, DC-based environmental justice advocate Vernice Miller-Travis.
