Paintings by celebrated artist James Porter (1905-1970) trace the development of this Washingtonian whose work has been exhibited widely in the United States (i.e., the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, and Museum of Modern Art in New York), Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa. Appointed in 1953 to head the Howard University art department and its gallery, Porter came to be considered the Father of African American art history and was the first to write a scholarly and comprehensive history of African American artists (Modern Negro Art, 1943 & reprinted in 1999, Howard University).

The 14 pieces in the show were donated to the museum by the artist's daughter Constance Porter Uzelac.
